You Are
a little history
Built to Spill formed in Boise, Idaho, around singer, songwriter, and guitarist Doug Martsch “You Are” appeared on their 2001 album Ancient Melodies of the Future, an album whose title almost describes the band's appeal. “You Are” is one of the album's more concise tracks it directness gives a quiet emotional weight.
why it followed me this week
I kept returning to this song because it feels warm without being overly comforting. There is something in its repetition that resembles trying to understand a person, or yourself, without ever arriving at one simple answer, like sitting with a feeling that hasn't quite developed a name yet.
On a Neck, On a Spit
a little history
Grizzly Bear began as Edward Droste's largely solitary recording project before developing into a full band. Their second album, Yellow House, released in 2006 and recorded in Droste's mother's house near Cape Cod.
why it followed me this week
This song feels like watching an ordinary place gradually become strange. I especially love how it refuses to remain one thing, messy in a deliberate way, like finding layers of wallpaper underneath one another and wanting to keep every version.
Mistress
a little history
Red House Painters formed in San Francisco around singer and songwriter Mark Kozelek. “Mistress” appeared on their 1993 album Red House Painters I, the Rollercoaster album. The record actually contains two versions of the song, the full band recording and a later piano version. The original surrounds its emotional heaviness with restrained guitar and a steady arrangement.
why it followed me this week
It expresses loneliness without trying to make it presentable, or agreeable. Its restraint makes every shift feel the emotion.
